Institutul de Investigare a Crimelor Comunismului şi Memoriei Exilului Românesc vă invită să participaţi la conferinţa Intelectualii occidentali si tentaţia comunismului. Aceasta va fi susţinută de profesorul emerit Paul Hollander (Universitatea Massachusetts, SUA), membru în Consiliul Ştiinţific al IICCMER, si va fi moderată de profesorul Ioan Stanomir, preşedinte executiv al IICCMER.
Profesorul Paul Hollander a studiat sociologia la Princeton University (PhD, 1963), după ce a părăsit Ungaria comunistă în contextul violenţelor din Budapesta anului 1956. A redactat numeroase studii în domeniul istoriei ideilor, a filosofiei culturii şi al studiilor de politică comparată. Între cărţile de referinţă ale domniei sale de numără: Soviet and American Society: A Comparison (1972); Political Pilgrims (1981); Anti-Americanism (1992); Political Will and Personal Belief (1999), Discontents: Postmodern and Post-communist (2002) şi The Only Super Power: Reflections on Strength, Weakness, and Anti-Americanism (2008). A editat volumul From the Gulag to the Killing Fields: Personal Accounts of Political Violence And Repression in Communist States (2008) şi The Only Super Power: Reflections on Strength, Weakness, and Anti-Americanism (2009).
Numerous prominent Western intellectuals were attracted to (and visited) the Soviet Union during the interwar period, and in the 1960s and 1970s communist China, Cuba, North Vietnam and other third world communist states. On a smaller scale, such political pilgrimages are currently taking place at the present time to Venezuela under Chavez.
